Callicore selection (no antennae; slightly frayed wings)
26x19x6cm frame (blue)
A variety of specimens from the Callicore tribe, mounted to show their dorsal sides.
The Callicore tribe is commonly referred to as Numberwings, because the patterns on the underside hindwings resemble numbers or letters of the alphabet.
These beautiful jewel-like butterflies are found in wet tropical rainforest areas of Venezuela, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and the upper Amazonian region of Brazil. They are usually encountered as solitary males and have a rapid and powerful flight over short distances.
These butterflies often visit river beaches to imbibe dissolved minerals. On hot sunny days they habitually land on the arms, legs and backs of humans to imbibe sweat.
